Desert Adventure in the Steens
The Steens desert offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes for adventure riders. In this post, I’ll take you through our recent trip across the dunes, rocky outcrops, and endless skies—complete with a few close calls, gear tips, and unforgettable moments.
The Adventure Begins
We set out early, the sun just peeking over the horizon. The air was crisp, and the only sounds were the hum of our engines and the crunch of gravel beneath our tires. The Steens’ vastness is humbling—miles of open desert, dramatic cliffs, and the promise of adventure around every bend.
“There’s nothing like the freedom of riding through the open desert with your brother by your side.”
Scenic Highlights
- Towering dunes that seem to stretch forever
- Rocky outcrops perfect for a quick break and photo op
- Endless skies painted with the colors of sunrise and sunset
Gear for the Ride
When you’re riding in the desert, the right gear makes all the difference. Here’s what I relied on:
- Helmet: Lightweight, well-ventilated, and dustproof
- Gloves: Check out our recommended gloves to keep hands protected from the elements
- Hydration pack: Absolutely essential in the dry heat
- Goggles: For those sudden sand gusts
Pro tip: Always pack extra water and a basic tool kit. The desert is beautiful, but it doesn’t forgive mistakes!
Lessons from the Road
Every trip teaches you something new. This time, I learned the value of patience (and a good GPS!). We took a wrong turn, but it led us to one of the most stunning overlooks of the trip.
